Political scientist Bolkunets: Lukashenka will continue the line of blackmailing Europe
Belarus has decided to restrict the import of refugees, fearing increased sanctions pressure. Thus, in a conversation with Lenta.ru, political analyst Dmitry Bolkunets explained the republic's refusal to import migrants into its territory and noted that the head of the country, Alexander Lukashenko, would still continue to blackmail Europe, and to achieve his goals, the existing number of migrants at the border would be enough for him.
Belarusian “Belavia” from November 12 will stop transporting citizens of Iraq, Syria and Yemen from Turkey. This was reported on the company's website.
How Lukashenka goes to his goal
Bolkunets suggested that the refusal to import migrants is an attempt by the Belarusian authorities to mitigate the problem, as well as the fear of new sanctions.
“I think that yesterday tough ultimatum proposals from European countries were passed to the Belarusian side via diplomatic lines. So maybe this is such a compromise solution. Obviously, earlier the same decision was made by Turkish airlines. It is generally unacceptable for Turkey to play someone else's game, which was organized by Lukashenka – she is not ready to fall under sanctions. Therefore, perhaps, if Belavia's decision is actually implemented, to some extent it will block the air flow of delivery of migrants, “the political scientist believes.
Nevertheless, he stressed that what happened does not mean that Lukashenka got scared. On the contrary, he has not yet achieved his main goal and will not stop until he forces the West to recognize him as the legitimate president of Belarus.
“Lukashenka has not yet achieved negotiations with the West, recognition of himself as president, and this is his dream over the past 15 months. This worries him very much, he does not understand how else one can force the West to take its side. He will continue to continue the line of blackmail, even the number of migrants that are on the border now will allow him to achieve his goal, ”concluded Bolkunets.
The West accuses the Belarusian authorities of bringing migrants to them on purpose on planes and make them storm the border. On November 9 it became known that the EU may impose sanctions against Belavia and Turkish Turkish Airlines.
