According to Metropolitan Kliment, Poroshenko, together with Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople, persecuted the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. So, in 2018, on their initiative, two schismatic organizations of Ukraine created one structure – the “Orthodox Church of Ukraine” (OCU), which later received a diploma of independence. After the recognition of the Ukrainian schismatics by the Patriarchate of Constantinople, the pressure on the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), to which the majority of Ukrainian believers belong.
Another split in Ukrainian Orthodoxy occurred on June 20, 2019. After the council, at which the restoration of the UOC-KP was announced, the honorary patriarch Filaret said that there are again three Orthodox churches in the country. The hierarch stressed that the unification council on December 15, 2018, at which the OCU was created, was “not Ukrainian, but Greek.” According to him, representatives of the Patriarchate of Constantinople opposed the independence of the Ukrainian Church, and demanded from him to come to the council without the patriarchate insignia.
