Former German government adviser Rahr: speaking with Lukashenko is beneath European dignity below European dignity, believes the ex-adviser to the German government, political scientist Alexander Rahr. In a conversation with Lenta.ru, he explained that it was for this reason that the acting German Chancellor Angela Merkel asked Russian President Vladimir Putin to influence Minsk, but Moscow expressed its reluctance to intervene in the conflict.
In a telephone conversation with Putin, Merkel called the use of migrants for pressure unacceptable and asked the Russian leader to influence the situation.
“Germany is on the side of Poland. The EU has a common vision of the situation: Lukashenka alone is to blame for the new migration crisis. And the media are trying to artificially present Putin as the culprit. Say, he does not stop blackmailing by refugees, whom Lukashenka is dealing with. So Merkel called Putin, tried to influence Lukashenka through him, with whom Europe itself does not want to talk – this is beneath European dignity. Lukashenka will only be punished. Putin replied to Merkel that the EU should still speak with Lukashenko on its own, that Russia cannot influence Minsk, “the political scientist said.
Rahr suggested that Putin disappointed and angered Merkel with his response. Nevertheless, the political scientist suggested that the head of Russia still promised to talk to Lukashenko, but explained that he could not prohibit the President of Belarus from inviting refugees.
“Putin wants the Europeans to bargain with Lukashenko themselves, does not want to, so that he would be dragged into the role of a mediator, from which he would soon, if the issue is not resolved, turn into an accomplice of Lukashenka, ”Rahr explained.
Earlier, several publications found out that the majority of migrants on the Belarusian-Polish border are immigrants from Syria, Iraq and Turkey, among them there are many Kurds. They get to Minsk by air from the airports of Ankara, Istanbul, Baghdad and Dubai, and from there they go west. Refugees and their families pay thousands of euros for a Belarusian visa and accommodation in the country.
