“Guarantors” of peace in Syria thought about meeting in Nur-Sultan

Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan “Interfax”: countries-guarantors of peace in Syria may meet in Nur-Sultan in Syria, the guarantor countries – Russia, Turkey and Iran – can meet in Nur-Sultan. Interfax writes about this with reference to the message of Kazakh Foreign Minister Mukhtar Tleuberdi.

As part of the “Astana process” on Syria, the foreign ministers of the listed countries – “guarantors” of peace in the Arab Republic – may meet separately. The meeting may take place in mid-December.

Tleuberdi added that Nur-Sultan has already thought about the format of the upcoming negotiations: they will probably be held offline. “We are agreeing on the format, the issues on the agenda have not been approved,” he explained.

In addition to the guarantor countries, the official government of Syria and the armed opposition are participating in the negotiations of the “Astana format”. Until 2018, the United States also participated in them as an observer, but for the past few years they have refused to attend the negotiations.
