Ukrainian hacker extorted $ 50 million from Apple

A hacker from Ukraine was arrested in the United States for extorting $ 50 million from Apple accused of extorting $ 50 million from Apple. This was reported by MacRumors.

Representatives of the department reported that Vasinsky belonged to the REvil group, which participated in network attacks on enterprises and government agencies in the United States. In April, a criminal gang attacked Apple supplier Quanta Computer and stole design schematics for a 14-inch MacBook Pro. Vasinsky and his accomplices demanded a ransom from Apple in the amount of $ 50 million.

It is clarified that REvil posted a ransom demand on its website, but a few days later the group deleted the message. The Ministry of Justice is also sure that Vasinsky took part in the July attack on the software manufacturer Kaseya.

Together with the hacker, his colleague Yevgeny Polyanin was taken into custody, but then released – 6.1 million dollars were seized from the latter. Both suspects were charged with conspiracy to commit fraud. Vasinsky is going to be extradited to the United States, he faces up to 115 years in prison.

In July, Ukrainian Microsoft employee Vladimir Kvashuk received a prison sentence. In court, it was proved that Kvashuk took advantage of a vulnerability in the company's system and thus robbed his employer of more than ten million dollars.
