According to the newspaper, while the annual conference of the Republican Jewish Coalition was held last weekend at The Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas, built by the Adelsons, the billionaire's widow managed to hold several meetings with representatives of the Republican Party in her home located in the same city. In particular, it became known that Adelson spoke with the leader of the minority in the House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy and the chairman of the National Republican Committee of the US Senate Rick Scott.
Adelson also crossed paths with Republicans who are considered the most likely candidates from the party in the presidential election of 2024: former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, former US Permanent Representative to the UN Nikki Haley, former Vice President Mike Pence, Texas Senator Ted Cruise and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. A number of meetings with other high-ranking representatives of the Republican Party were held by the political consultant of the family Andy Ebbud.
In addition, it became known that this year Adelson spoke several times with the leader of the minority in the Senate, Mitch McConnell. She also recently had a telephone conversation with former US President Donald Trump.
As Politico notes, these meetings were intended to show the Republicans that Adelson, a few months after the death of her husband, is ready to return to political affairs. At the same time, according to the interlocutor of the publication, until the billionaire began to give politicians specific promises related to funding, explaining that she would begin to make large donations closer to the next presidential election.
Miriam and Sheldon Adelsons regularly donated large sums to support for Republican politicians. So, according to the independent research organization Center for Responsive Politics, it was the Adelsons who became the largest sponsors of the Republican Party in three of the last five presidential elections. In particular, during the 2020 elections, the spouses donated more than $ 91 million to Trump's election campaign.
Sheldon Adelson died in January 2021. The cause of death was complications of lymphoma, which the billionaire suffered from. He was buried in Jerusalem.
