Crimean Tatars asked the UN to recognize Crimea as part of Russia

Crimean Tatars appealed to the General Assembly of the United Nations (UNGA), urging them to recognize the Crimea a part of Russia. This initiative was organized by public organization “kyrym birligi”. About it reports TASS.

As noted in the publication, the appeal of the Crimean Tatar organization also calls on the international community to condemn the policy of economic, commercial and financial blockade of Russian, and insists on the immediate abolition of anti-Russian sanctions. The signature under the document was signed by Vice-speaker of Crimean Parliament Remzi Ilyasov. Letter to appeal “qırım birligi,” the Chairman of the 71st session of the General Assembly, Peter Thomson was sent by the Russian Ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin.

The appeal stressed that in 2014 the residents took “the right decision” on the reunification with Russia at a time when the power of the state coup in Ukraine “jeopardize freedom, life and security of the population of Crimea”.

In February 2014, in Kiev was a coup, the country’s President Viktor Yanukovych was ousted from power and was forced to leave the country. In some regions in the East of Ukraine and in the Crimea began mass protests of the residents do not recognise the legitimacy of the coup. March 16, 2014 the authorities of the Peninsula held a referendum on reunification with Russia. 21 Mar 2014 Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law on admitting Crimea and Sevastopol to Russia. 27 Mar 2014 the UNGA adopted a resolution calling the referendum illegal and calling on countries and international organizations not to recognize the Peninsula as part of Russia.
