The President of Moldova Igor Dodon has declared that the Republic is vital to restore relations with Russia. On Tuesday, February 7, he said on his Facebook page.
This statement of the Moldavian leader, he said, made at a meeting with the Chairman of the Council of Europe Donald Tusk. “We pointed out that now Moldova is vital to the restoration of relations with the Russian Federation”, — said Igor Dodon.
He also said that Chisinau may terminate the agreement on Association with the EU.
Dodon explained that “despite the optimistic forecasts about the development of the country after the signing of the Association agreement with the EU (…) after two years from the beginning of its implementation the situation in the country has deteriorated.”
In January, he expressed a desire to cancel the Association agreement with the European Union. In December 2016 the newly elected Moldovan President ordered to remove the EU flag from his residence. According to him, the legislation of the Republic “stipulates that public institutions should fly the other banners”. However, he noted that he has nothing against the EU.
Dodon was elected head of state in the second round of the presidential election in November 2016.
