Infectionist assesses the impact of influenza vaccination on antibodies to COVID-19

Infectionist Konovalov: influenza vaccination will not reduce the amount of antibodies to COVID-19

Pirogova, infectious disease doctor Ivan Konovalov, assessed the effect of influenza vaccination on antibodies to COVID-19 in people who have been ill. He told TASS that influenza vaccination will not affect the number of antibodies in any way.

“There is no such relationship. The immune system selectively responds to antigens that enter the body either in the form of a causative agent – an active virus, or with a vaccine preparation. Vaccination against coronavirus infection is not a hindrance to vaccination against influenza, “explained Konovalov.

The infectious disease specialist added that vaccination does not carry any harm and can be vaccinated throughout the season. “Since the immune system does not have a calendar, the vaccine will work regardless of the date of vaccination, will have a protective effect,” – said the doctor. Konovalov also recalled the need to observe personal protective measures and hygiene in the queue for vaccination.

Earlier, Elena Malinnikova, head of the Department of Virology of the Russian Medical Academy of Continuing Professional Education, said that influenza can be just as difficult and have the same negative consequences as COVID-19, especially for people who have had coronavirus. According to her, the flu has always been considered by infectious disease doctors as a disease that is quite difficult to tolerate.
