Nobel Peace Prize Laureates Call for Dropping Claims Against Memorial

Mikhail Gorbachev and Dmitry Muratov called for the withdrawal of claims against the Memorial society

Nobel Peace Prize winners – former USSR President Mikhail Gorbachev Novaya Gazeta editor Dmitry Muratov called for the withdrawal of claims against the Memorial society ( included by the Ministry of Justice in the register of organizations performing the functions of a foreign agent ). They noted that they shared the alarm in Russia caused by the demand to close it. This is reported by Novaya Gazeta.

According to Gorbachev and Muratov, the activities of Memorial for many years were aimed at restoring historical justice, as well as preserving the memory of those killed and injured during the repression of citizens. The continuation of the work of the society is in the interests of the country, they noted.

In particular, the Nobel Peace Prize laureates called for the postponement of the date of the meeting to consider the claim.

Earlier, the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov said that Memorial has long had problems in terms of compliance with the norms of Russian law. According to him, “this is a well-known fact.” The organization received the notification on November 11 and said it was a “political decision”.
