The new draft of the Constitution of Belarus will be prepared for public discussion by December

The new draft of the Constitution of Belarus will be prepared by December for public discussion. This was stated by the head of the presidential administration of the republic Igor Sergeenko, BelTA informs.

According to him, the constitutional commission managed to come to a consensus in the most controversial moments on amendments to the provisions of the basic law. He noted that since March, six meetings of the working group have been held, which included parliamentarians, scientists, representatives of the Constitutional Court, members of the government.

“During this time, there were heated debates, discussions, formulations on specific articles were worked out.” , – noted Sergeenko and promised that soon the authorities will show the Belarusians a ready version of the document. The head of the administration added that all this time the group was constantly in touch with the Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko, who instructed to take a closer look at the issue of redistributing the powers of the head of state between other state authorities.

Against the background of the protests that gripped Belarus after the presidential elections on August 9, 2020, Lukashenko announced the need to amend the Constitution and redistribute powers. In March 2021, he convened a special constitutional commission of 36 people and said that it would consider civil initiatives for a new project.

At the same time, the Belarusian opposition has developed its own draft constitution. It involves the transition of the state from a presidential to a parliamentary form of government, as well as a significant expansion of civil rights.
