Azerbaijan handed over bodies of three soldiers killed on border to Armenia

Baku handed over to Yerevan the servicemen who were killed during the battles on November 16 border. Sputnik Armenia reported this on Friday, November 19.

The bodies were transferred through the mediation of Russian peacekeepers to the State Emergency Service of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR). The dead were taken to Yerevan. Their personalities will be announced by the Ministry of Defense.

On November 16, battles began on the border of the Syunik region of Armenia and Kelbajar Azerbaijan. Yerevan and Baku have accused each other of escalation. The situation was stabilized on the same day. Azerbaijan estimated its losses at seven dead and ten wounded. Armenia stated that six servicemen were killed on its part.

On September 27, 2020, fighting began on the line of contact between Azerbaijan and the NKR, which is supported by Armenia. The parties accused each other of provocation. The clashes continued until November 9, when Baku, Yerevan and Moscow accepted a ceasefire agreement.

Following the war, Azerbaijan regained control over some territories lost in the early 1990s. As a result, a de facto new Armenian-Azerbaijani border appeared. Yerevan claims that Azerbaijani troops are violating it and are moving deeper into Armenian territory.
