Putin spoke out against the climate divide

Putin urged to resist the attempts of the US and EU authorities to dictate the climate agenda

Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke out against the split between countries on climate change issues. The head of state called on diplomacy to resist the attempts of the US and European Union (EU) authorities to dictate an agenda on the problem, TASS reports.

Putin stressed that Russia is considered one of the leaders in the decarbonization process, noting that the climate agenda is not one must resort to single-handed action. “Our diplomacy should more actively oppose the attempts of the European Union and the United States to arrogate to itself the right to dictate the climate agenda and form standards for itself on this topic,” the president said.

According to Putin, Russia is actively and creatively involved in the search solutions to the problem of climate change. He attributed the country's advantages in this area to clean nuclear and hydropower, gas power generation and the high absorbing capacity of local ecosystems. The President also specified that Russia must reach carbon neutrality no later than 2060.

In October, during a videoconference at the G20 summit, Putin announced that Russia is fulfilling all international obligations under climate conservation programs. As an example, the President named the implementation of a policy to reduce emissions of clean greenhouse gases.
