Finger Snap physics clarified

Scientists from the USA: the human body makes the most acceleration when clicking fingers showed that during it the human body produces the greatest known acceleration. An article by scientists was published in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface.

After watching the movie “Avengers: Infinity War,” researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology decided to find out if it is possible to snap fingers in a metal glove, as the antagonist Thanos does in the movie. Scientists have studied the click process using high-speed imaging and force sensors.

“A finger click takes just seven milliseconds. This is more than 20 times faster than the blink of an eye – 150 milliseconds, ”says one of the researchers, Saad Bhamla. Experts have found that the maximum angular speed of rotation can reach 7800 degrees per second, and the angular acceleration – 1.6 million degrees per second squared. The acceleration recorded by scientists is the largest measured for the human body. At the same time, the recorded rotation speed is not the highest known: a large one was recorded when a baseball player was throwing the ball.

However, when putting on thimbles, the maximum angular acceleration dropped significantly. “Our results indicate that Thanos could not snap because of his plated fingers,” laments lead author Raghav Akarya. According to the researchers, this is due to the reduction in the contact area between the fingers. At the same time, the attempt to increase friction by wearing gloves did not lead to the desired effect. This, scientists believe, indicates the existence of an optimal level of friction for clicking, into which the skin “falls”. It turned out that the click speed is due to the high friction between the thumb and middle finger. It allows you to store energy until it is released, when your thumb slides off.
