Unique settlement of the XIV century found in Udmurtia

Archaeologists have found a 14th century settlement in Udmurtia, dating back to the post-Chepets period

A unique 14th century settlement was unexpectedly found by archaeologists in the Udmurtia region in the Glazov region. This was reported on the page of the Idnakar reserve in VKontakte.

The message says that experts have made a sensational find. Thus, a “new puzzle of the archaeological map” of the region has emerged. Artifacts studied by scientists indicate the post-Chepets period. The archaeologists were also able to reconstruct the exact time frame of this settlement.

“Let us remind you that before the monuments of this period in the basin of the middle reaches of the Cheptsa were not known,” – said in the reserve. Previously, scientists were convinced that the settlement finally disappeared in the XIII century along with the Chepetsk archaeological culture.

In conclusion, experts added that “the sensational find is the first reliable and unmistakably dated settlement of the Golden Horde time on the Chepetsk lands.” Archaeologists will also continue excavations in the area.

The Chepetsk culture dates back to the 9th-15th centuries. Its active development took place in the middle reaches of the Cheptsa River. The main existing settlement was Idnakar (Soldyrskoe I). Local residents were engaged in agriculture, cattle breeding, hunting, fishing, beekeeping and bone carving craft. The decline of culture gradually began in the XIII century.

Earlier it became known that archaeologists conducted excavations in Oryol, after which it turned out that the city is much older than its years. Thus, the findings helped the experts to “age” the city built 455 years ago by another five centuries.
