In Turkmenistan, almost 20 businessmen were accused of hacking and their access to the Internet was restricted

In Turkmenistan, almost 20 entrepreneurs were banned from using the Internet. Radio Azatlyk (recognized by the Russian Ministry of Justice as a foreign agent) reports this with reference to sources familiar with the situation.

The businessmen who were affected by the restriction lived in the Lebap velayat and were engaged in photo and video filming of weddings and the provision of printing services. During the surprise raids, police and Ministry of National Security (MNS) officials found computers with a VPN installed in their offices, according to one source.

After that, the businessmen were accused of “hacking”, and the court banned them from using the Internet until 2025. The source noted that access to the World Wide Web was terminated even in their homes, and the mobile Internet was turned off for the relatives of the entrepreneurs. In addition, smartphones were taken away from the businessmen themselves and instead they were given old push-button telephones with a black and white display.

According to entrepreneurs, such measures of the Turkmen law enforcement agencies are connected with the desire of the authorities to prevent the distribution of leaflets criticizing Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. One of the sources also added that the Ministry of National Security believes that opposition movements located abroad may be behind all this.

Earlier, a meeting was held at the S. Seidi Pedagogical Institute in Turkmenabat, during which the rector and a representative of the prosecutor's office criticized students for their moral character. Students were asked not to use social networks, and those wishing to leave for the United States were threatened with expulsion from the university.
