Meta showed a prototype virtual reality glove
Meta (formerly Facebook) has shown a prototype virtual reality glove. This is reported by The Verge.
The device was developed by Meta Reality Labs, the company's engineers have been working on the prototype for the past seven years. The device shown is a glove that can simulate the user's touch of objects. On the inside of the gadget there are 15 ribbed inflatable cushions that create the necessary pressure on the user's fingers. The movement of the glove in space and flexion of the fingers are analyzed by sensors.
Depending on the situation, a complex system supplies air to a specific part of the glove. The user has the feeling that he is actually touching certain items. At the moment, the invention is quite cumbersome and needs to be physically connected to a computer. Reality Labs is going to make the glove standalone and lightweight.
Michael Abrash, head of Reality Labs, described the possible use of the glove using the example of a dog being stroked by a user. The specialist noted that physically the wearer of the VR glove will have a slightly different experience: “However, emotionally and empirically it will feel like something real.”
At the end of October, the head of Facebook, Mar Zuckerberg, announced the change of the company's name to Meta. The entrepreneur also announced the creation of a “metaverse” to which users will connect in VR (virtual) or AR (augmented reality) modes.
