The Drive: Russian Checkmate looks like a medium fighter
What is called a promising Russian light tactical aircraft (LTS) known as Checkmate (“Checkmate”) and the Su-75 actually looks like a medium fighter. The American edition of The Drive was surprised at the size of the aircraft being developed by Rostec.
The publication notes that “Checkmate has a length of about 17 meters with a wingspan of 12 meters, compared to the same figures of 20 and 14 meters for Su-57 “. “The [Su-75] fighter is much larger than we could have imagined, at least compared to the Su-57,” the newspaper writes.
The main advantage of the Su-75 in the publication is its ability to overcome significant distances. “Due to its significant internal fuel volume, its ability to perform longer combat missions over long distances while remaining unobtrusive can be a major advantage,” notes The Drive.
In November, Teal Group aviation analyst Richard Abulafia said Breaking Defense that LTS does not pose a threat to the F-35 Lightning II due to the fact that, in his opinion, many countries that could buy the Su-75 do not want strategic relations with modern Russia.
In October, The Drive noted that the size of the wingman, the heavy attack drone Okhotnik, is only slightly inferior to the leading Russian fifth-generation fighter Su-57.
In July, Rostec presented LTS at the International Aviation space salon MAKS-21. According to the general director of “Rostec” Sergei Chemezov, a single-engine tactical fighter will cost from 25 to 30 million dollars. As the head of the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) Yuri Slyusar noted, the aircraft shown on the cabin is a model that will fly in 2023.
