A rare book of the late 19th century was presented in the library of the Altai Territory

The library of the Altai Institute presented a valuable edition of Goethe's Faust in Fet's translation

books of the late 19th century – the poem “Faust” by Goethe, translated by the Russian writer Athanasius Fet. This was reported on the website of the Altai Territory Administration.

The Institute's specialists reported that the translation of “Faust” was made by Fet in 1882-1888 and is considered the most successful. Before the lyrics, other famous Russian poets also worked on the translation of the poem at different times – Vasily Zhukovsky, Alexander Griboyedov, Fedor Tyutchev, Dmitry Venevitinov and Alexei Tolstoy.

In 1889, the book was published by the publishing house of Adolf Marx in St. Petersburg , to the 140th anniversary of the birth of Goethe. Its dimensions are 42 by 33 centimeters, the volume is 100 pages. The translation added 25 sheets of illustrations in prints by the famous German artist Engelbert Seibertz, made in the Old German style.

“For printing the prints, we also used the highest quality paper made by Pechatkin's factory in Krasnoe Selo, and the typeset was specially cast in “Slovolitiy OI Leman” in St. Petersburg. Copper engraved plates for prints were specially made in Paris, “- said the staff of the institute.

It is noted that the book entered the library of the institute in 1939. Currently, only a few copies of such a Faust edition remain in Russia.

Earlier in October, the Altai Republic celebrated the Day of the Altai language. Thus, the National Library named after Chevalkov hosted annual regional readings. Their participants were also able to join the quiz “Helen chakka-enchi bolgon ediskelӱ erke tilim”.
