The founder of the drift school: the peculiarity of coastal drift is the refusal of the handbrake and the brake
The main feature of drift in the Far East is the refusal hand and main brakes. Dmitry Semenyuk, one of the first drifters in Russia, owner and founder of a sports drift school in Vladivostok, spoke about this as part of the Russian Fast and Furious project.
“We have a grip. We have gas. And we have a steering wheel. We do not have more tools for driving a car. We must, let's say, feel the car enough to drive it without auxiliary tools, “Semenyuk said.
The racer explained that the difficulty of this technique is to correctly distribute the speed and measure the vehicle's positioning point. At his school, Semenyuk generally prohibits students from using the handbrake and brake – this is the main feature of the drift school in Vladivostok. “You are learning, and you must be able to do this without these things [slow down], and when you know how, then not using the handbrake and the brake at all is not a big deal,” said the drifter.
Drift Is a cornering technique using a controlled skid. Sport drift originated in Japan and gained popularity in Russia after the release of the movie “The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift” in the early 2000s. At that time, Russian drifters started as underground racers, and now they organize world-class competitions.
The special project “Russian Fast and Furious” is dedicated to the life of motorists in the Far East and the unusual automotive culture that began to form in the region back in Soviet times. Already in the 1980s, the first Japanese cars began to be imported to Primorye. Over time, a huge car market emerged in Vladivostok, which reached its peak in the 1990s. The active development of the automotive culture influenced the formation of the interests of young Russians and contributed to the appearance of the first Russian drifters in the region.
