Tax Justice Network: Countries lose $ 483 billion annually to tax evasion

Countries lose $ 483 billion annually from for tax evasion by transnational corporations and the super-rich. This amount was named by the international non-governmental organization Tax Justice Network (TJN) in its report.

Tax evasion cost countries 13 percent more than a year earlier. The report notes that the amount of unpaid taxes would be enough to ensure the entire population of the Earth is vaccinated against coronavirus three times. $ 312 billion countries were underpaid by multinational corporations, and $ 171 billion fell on individuals.

Rich countries lose more taxes in absolute terms – 443 billion. Poor countries lose just 40 billion, but lose nearly half of their health budgets (48 percent), compared to just ten percent for rich countries.

The United States ($ 113.5 billion), the United Kingdom ($ 52 billion), Germany ($ 43.7 billion) and France ($ 41.3 billion) lost the most in tax revenues. Russia's losses amounted to just over three billion dollars, or 0.2 percent of GDP.

To solve the problem, the report suggests introducing a super-profit tax for transnational corporations, as well as a luxury tax for the super-rich. Proceeds from new taxes in the report propose to send to finance recovery from the pandemic. The authors of the report also recommend the creation of a UN Convention and an international forum to develop taxation standards.

At the end of October, the leaders of the G20, during a summit in Rome, approved the introduction of a single minimum tax rate of 15 percent for transnational corporations. The heads of state called on the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) to develop norms and multilateral instruments to introduce new rules around the world as early as 2023.
