Danger of collision of ISS with space debris revealed

Cosmonaut Kornienko: untimely detection of debris could lead to a hole in the ISS station (ISS) with space debris. The cosmonaut told Izvestia about the crew's actions in the event of a risk of collision.

Kornienko noted that untimely detection of space debris could lead to a collision with it and the breakdown of the ISS hull. The station crew has a spare time to search for a hole and seal the damaged area. He emphasized that in the event of a critical drop in pressure, the crew must descend to Earth by spacecraft.

According to the cosmonaut, the tracking stations make it possible to find out about the threat of a collision in a few days. In some cases, a dangerous debris can be seen before approaching the ISS. In this case, the crew of the station takes refuge in a spacecraft.

Earlier, specialists from the Mission Control Center near Moscow recommended that the cosmonauts transfer to the Soyuz MS-19 spacecraft. It was expected that the station would approach space debris at 10:06 Moscow time.

Later, from the negotiations of the station's crew with the Earth, it became known that the debris flew past the ISS. The astronauts were allowed to leave the ship until the next rendezvous. Space debris may again approach the station on the same day.

On October 10, the Mission Control Center allowed the ISS to avoid collision with space debris. A fragment of the Chinese meteorological satellite Fengyun-1C was approaching the station.
