Bolkunets recalled that the EU authorities have already taken a number of measures to stop the flow of migrants to Belarus from the Middle East.
“Official Minsk will try to get out of the game without losing face among the nomenklatura, especially the security forces,” the political scientist believes. – Russia, despite its demonstrative support for Lukashenka in the migration crisis, for the first time faced the risk of getting sanctions for the actions of its ally. This policy is connected with the long-standing confrontation between the EU and Russia and with the desire not to enter into confrontation with Lukashenka. ” in his opinion, there are illusions that Lukashenka will go for deepening integration.
Through the created migration crisis, Lukashenka could sabotage integration projects with Russia – the topic could become the subject of his bargaining with Europe. However, Brussels does not see any prospects for doing business with an uncompromising Belarusian leader and prefers to solve problems in a different way, Bolkunets concluded.
The flow of migrants from Belarus to the EU has sharply increased after Lukashenka, against the background of another aggravation of relations with the West, threatened loosen control over the border. For several days, thousands of migrants have been trying to get to Poland. The EU blames official Minsk for the current situation and threatens to impose new sanctions against the Belarusian regime.
