In Honduras, the mayor of the municipality of Cantarranas Francisco Gaitana was shot dead 
The politician Gaitan represented the Liberal Party. He was killed while speaking at a rally in front of his supporters. The attacker shot the mayor 15 times.
The offender was detained by the protesters – he was handed over to the police. The organizers of the murder are still unknown. The Liberal Party has called on the authorities to investigate.
Earlier on Christmas Eve, the mayor of the Mexican city of Jalapa de Diaz Arturo García Velazquez was shot dead. Also, a group of armed people killed the son-in-law of the mayor, an employee of the tax service of the city, Javier Terrero.
