Belarus informs the EU about the measures taken to reduce the flow of migrants

Makei and Borrell discussed the migration crisis on the Polish-Belarusian border by phone European Commission, High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell amid the escalating refugee crisis on the Belarusian-Polish border. The relevant information was published on Sunday, November 14, on the website of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry.

It is clarified that Makei informed his interlocutor about the steps taken by the Belarusian side to reduce the flow of migrants from Asia, Africa and the Middle East, as well as providing humanitarian assistance to refugees at the border and interaction on this issue with the relevant international organizations of the UN system.

The Belarusian Foreign Minister noted that Minsk is ready for a dialogue with the EU based on equality and mutual respect. In addition, he stressed the “hopelessness of sanctions and for the development” of further relations. The parties also confirmed their interest in an early settlement of the migration crisis and agreed to maintain open channels for dialogue.

Earlier, the official representative of the EU's foreign policy service Peter Stano said that the new EU sanctions against Minsk will affect all those involved in the “dirty, inhuman and illegal business ”for transporting migrants to the Belarusian borders with the EU. He also said that in addition to airlines, travel agencies and other intermediaries may fall under restrictive measures.
