Europe appreciated the possibility of cutting off gas by Belarus

The representative of the EC called the cutoff of gas by Belarus “a purely hypothetical opportunity”

“. This assessment was given by the official representative of the European Commission Dana Spinant, TASS reports.

Spinant also noted that the European Commission “prefers not to speculate on this topic.” A similar opinion was expressed in the German Ministry of Energy. The ministry said that they took into account this possibility and regretted the position of Minsk. At the same time, the representative of the Ministry of Energy is confident that Russia will be able to fulfill its obligations under the contracts and ensure the security of supplies.

In November, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko said that Belarus would cut off Russian gas supplies to the EU through the Yamal-Europe pipeline that runs through the territory of the country. This is how Lukashenko reacted to the likelihood that Poland will close the border with Belarus amid the migration crisis. Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov stressed that Lukashenko's statement was not coordinated with Moscow.

The European Union is preparing a new package of sanctions against the government of Belarus. The bloc believes that Lukashenka is to blame for the migration crisis, who has weakened control over the influx of migrants into the country against the backdrop of a cooling in relations between Minsk and the West. The sanctions may also affect airlines, which the EU suspects of transporting refugees to Belarus.
