In Los Angeles, two women gave birth to each other's children due to an IVF error
In the American city of Los Angeles, California , two women found that they had given birth to each other's daughters due to an error in an in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedure. This is reported by the Daily Mail.
One of the confused girls was brought up in the family of 41-year-old musician Alexander Cardinale and his 43-year-old wife Daphne. Alexander claims that at first glance he noticed that his daughter was not like him or Daphne. In his words, he could not get rid of the feeling that they got a strange child.
At first, Daphne tried to convince her husband and herself that everything was fine. The woman considered the girl her own daughter, as she carried and gave birth to her. But other people began to notice the lack of similarity between the child and the parents.
A few weeks later, Cardinale received a call from the clinic where in vitro fertilization was performed, and asked to send a photo of the child. After that, Daphne bought a DNA test and made sure that the parents of the girl, who by that time was two months old, were indeed other people.
The couple hired a lawyer who obtained confirmation from the clinic representatives that the embryos were mixed up during in vitro fertilization. It turned out that Cardinale had the biological daughter of another couple, who, in turn, gave birth to their child.
Having learned the truth, Cardinale first saw a photograph of their real daughter. They found out that another couple had named her Zoey and decided not to change that name. When the girls were four months old, the couples exchanged children. Although the experience was an ordeal for everyone, families have rallied and now spend weekends and holidays together.
Cardinale is suing the California Center for Reproductive Health, which performed in vitro fertilization, and its owner, Dr. Eliran Mora. The couple accuses the clinic of medical error, negligence and fraud.
Earlier it was reported that an aunt in the US state of Florida became a surrogate mother for her own nephew. The woman claims that she initially understood that this was not her child and saw pregnancy as helping her sister.
