Sex tourism has damaged the unique natural complexes in the Canary Islands
tourism. The influx of casual sex lovers on the beach has damaged natural complexes in the popular Spanish resort. The researchers came to such conclusions in their report, it was published on the ScienceDirect portal.
The Maspalomas dunes in the Canary Islands are in danger – one of the few remaining moving sandy hills in Europe. This area is home to rare plants and unique animals, some of which are considered endemic (found in very limited areas). The picturesque reserve attracts tourists – many go there in search of casual sex.
Scientists have studied about 300 popular “sex sites” with a total area of 5.8 thousand square meters and found that the sexual activity of visitors negatively affected the local flora and fauna. From discarded cigarette butts, contraceptives and trampled grass, ten species of plants and some animals were affected. Gran Canaria's giant lizards often mistake condoms for jellyfish, eat them and die.
The Canary Islands government has drawn attention to the ecological situation in the Maspalomas Nature Reserve and has organized several operations to clear the coasts of debris and dead vegetation. The authorities also ordered the owners of the resorts to warn guests about the need to protect the nature of the dunes.
Previously, experts have named ways to make sex more sustainable. To do this, you need to choose lubricants, condoms, toys for adults and underwear, the production of which causes minimal harm to the planet. Solar-powered intimate products are already on sale, and some companies have launched a sex toy recycling program.
