WMO: Several Pacific Island States May Vanish Due to Climate Change
as well as major natural disasters. Such a development of events was predicted by scientists in a report by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), RIA Novosti reports.
Experts noted that the temperature of the Pacific Ocean waters is increasing at least three times faster than the world average rate of warming. At the same time, heat waves cause irreparable harm to the ocean ecosystem, on which the vital activity of the entire region and a number of specific countries depends.
According to scientists, such natural phenomena as forest fires in Australia and floods in Southeast Asia will repeat from year to year. WMO also warned that the tropical glacier between the Himalayas and the Andes will disappear within five years.
Earlier, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison proposed using capitalism's investment opportunities to save the planet, rather than state controls. He stressed that attempts by the authorities of countries to curb climate change through bans, regulations and taxes lead to an increase in the cost of living of citizens and badly affect the business environment.
