In the US state of Georgia, the invasion of huge poisonous spiders from Asia has begun. This is reported by Science Alert.

Millions of giant spiders, Trichonephila clavata, cover houses and power lines with cobwebs up to three meters deep. University of Georgia entomologist Will Hudson claims to have killed more than 300 spiders that lined his porch. “Last year I noticed several dozen spiders in my garden,” he said. “And this year there are already hundreds of them, and they gave my home a creepy look.”

Trichonephila clavata is distributed in Japan, Taiwan, Korea and China. In the United States, his appearance was noticed in 2014. Georgia Natural History Museum employee Rick Hebeke, who first noticed the large yellow spiders spreading across the state, believes that representatives of this species crossed the ocean in a shipping container. Over the years, they have multiplied to such an extent that it became difficult to ignore them.

Biologists say that most of the Asian spiders terrorizing Georgia will be extinct by the end of November due to cold weather, but this is not the last meeting with them … Each female of this species lays about 400 eggs, which tolerate winter well. In addition, spring winds carry newly hatched spiders long distances along with the spider webs.

Entomologist Nancy Hinkle believes that Trichonephila clavata spiders can be beneficial for agriculture, as they destroy many harmful insects, in which previously had no natural enemies.

Trichonephila clavata spiders grow up to eight centimeters in length. Although these arthropods are poisonous, their venom is designed to immobilize victims and does not pose a threat to humans or domestic animals.

Earlier it was reported that an invasion of the genus Erigone began in Northern Ireland. These small black arthropods can travel long distances with the wind.
