Elderly people have found a protective mechanism against COVID-19

Canadian scientists: older people with COVID-19 develop more antibodies to the virus

50 years old, produce more antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 than younger ones. An article dedicated to a previously unknown defense mechanism appeared in Scientific Reports.

Researchers from the Universities of Laval and Montreal collected blood samples from 32 patients 14-21 days after their PCR test for COVID-19 was found positive. “Everyone who was infected with the coronavirus produced antibodies, but in the elderly, their content was higher than in people under 50. In addition, antibodies were in the blood even 16 weeks after diagnosis, “- said one of the researchers, professor at the University of Montreal, Jean-François Masson.

At the same time, the antibodies of the elderly provided greater protection, scientists noted. “This was determined by measuring the ability of antibodies to suppress the interaction of the S-protein of the delta variant (coronavirus – approx.” Lenta.ru “) with the ACE2 receptor,” – said study author Joelle Pelletier. At the same time, for other variants of SARS-CoV-2, such a dependence was not observed, the scientists specified.

In vaccinated people with asymptomatic COVID-19, the antibody titer doubled. In addition, their antibodies were better able to prevent the coronavirus from binding to ACE2. One of the “young” study participants, unlike those vaccinated, did not develop such antibodies – this, according to scientists, indicates that vaccination enhances protection against the delta variant.
