China, which has promised to reduce emissions, began to buy twice as much coal

CNBC: China increased its coal purchases by 96.2 percent compared to October 2020

In October, China purchased 26.9 million tons of coal, which almost doubled, or 96.2 percent, more compared to the same period a year earlier. CNBC writes about such an increase.

In September last year, Chinese President Xi Jinping, in a video message to the UN General Assembly, presented China's new climate policy. The head of the second largest world economy promised that the country will seek to reduce the growth of emissions in order to reach a peak by 2030, and in 30 years to reduce them to the level of carbon neutrality.

Thus, after only a year, the country had to substantially adjust their plans to make up for the critical power shortage. In early October, 18 provinces faced significant resource shortages, but the return of coal-fired generation reduced their number to two.

Due to the energy crisis a month ago, a number of factories in China stopped, including food producers. The lack of energy threatens the country with a food crisis, because dairy factories and refrigerators, where meat is stored, remain under the threat of shutdown.

Earlier it became known that China in mid-October asked Russia to double the volume of electricity supplies in November and December 2021. At the same time, since the beginning of the month, Inter RAO has already increased the volume of electricity exported to China by 90 percent.
