Trump extended sanctions against the Syrian government

WASHINGTON, may 8 — RIA Novosti. The US President Donald trump has extended for one year sanctions against the Syrian government. Its decision the head of state informed the Congress in a special letter, the text of which published the press service of the White house.

In the letter to extend the validity of sanctions imposed in 2006-2012 in response to “unusual and extraordinary threat” from the government of Syria, “national security interests, foreign policy and the U.S. economy.”

Among these actions trump calls “brutality and repression” of the Syrian authorities towards its citizens, “the desire (to possess — ed.) and the use of chemical and biological weapons, the pursuit of weapons of mass destruction and missile programs,” “support for terrorist organizations” and also “undermine efforts of U.S. and international efforts to stabilize and rebuild Iraq.”

“The United States condemns the brutal violence and human rights violations by the regime (Syrian President Bashar) Assad and urging him to stop the violence against the Syrian people, to respect the cessation of hostilities, to ensure the delivery of humanitarian assistance, to allow a political transition in Syria that will facilitate the safe way to greater freedom, democracy, opportunity and justice in the future”, the document says.
