UN Secretary-General, antónio Guterres, put forward a proposal to create a new office for combating terrorism. As reported TASS, he stated this on Wednesday, 22nd February, at the informal meeting of the General Assembly.
According to the Secretary General, it is necessary to bring a task force on counter-terrorism implementation and the UN centre for combating terrorism of the Department of political Affairs, creating a new management.
He added that the only purpose of this step is to increase the efficiency without changing existing mandates in the field of counter-terrorism.
The Secretary General suggested to the head of the administration stood by his Deputy. “It will be to report to the General Assembly through me,” he added.
The office’s activities will not infringe upon the national sovereignty of any state member of the organization, said Guterres. “Our goal is to strengthen partnerships with countries outside the United Nations, to combat transnational problem of terrorism, which needs to be addressed as soon as possible”, — he stressed.
