The Kremlin said the protest of Japan in connection with the name of the Kuril Islands
Of the Russian Federation exercised its sovereign right, reminded the press-Secretary of the President Dmitry Peskov.
Moscow. 14 Feb. INTERFAX.RU — IN the Kremlin declared that the Kuril Islands are the territory of the Russian Federation and their name is a sovereign right of Russia.
At the request of journalists to comment on the protest, the Japanese side in connection with the naming of five of the Kuril Islands, the press Secretary of the President Dmitry Peskov said
The Kuril Islands, of course, remains the territory of the Russian Federation. And so in this case we are talking about the sovereign right
“Japan’s position is well known,” — said Peskov.
Earlier Japan has expressed Russia protest in connection with the decision to give names to five uninhabited Islands of the Kuril ridge.
The Russian government decree of February 10, has immortalized the memory of a number of generals and statesmen, giving them the names of five previously unnamed Islands in the far East. The Islands were named by the Soviet Lieutenant-General Aleksei Grechko, Soviet military leader and hero of Ukraine Kuzma Derevyanko, a former Governor of the Sakhalin region Igor Farkhutdinov, the Soviet statesman, diplomat Andrei Gromyko, the world’s first woman — captain Anna Shchetinina.
In December 2016, Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Japan on an official visit, during which the two leaders agreed on the text of the statement on the beginning of joint economic activities on the Kuril Islands.
