Snowden’s lawyer opposed the ban anonymity on the Internet

MOSCOW, 17 Jun — RIA Novosti. Russian society is not ready to completely ban anonymity on the Internet, but this does not mean that the violations in the network should remain unpunished, said the Chairman of the Public Council under the Ministry of internal Affairs of Russia, member of public chamber, lawyer Anatoly Kucherena.

“I’m like a lawyer (ex-CIA employee Edward) Snowden… I am opposed to even trying some revolutionary changes in the Internet to make… as to the Commission of the crime, including the Internet, Yes, I do, because if there is evidence you need to bring the person to justice,” said Kucherena on air of TV channel “Russia 24”, commenting on the initiative to ban anonymity on the Internet.

But, according to counsel, “not at the stage of development of our society today is” to completely eliminate anonymity on the Internet.

Previously, the bill on regulating the work of the messengers was held in the state Duma in the first reading. The document obliges the organizers of the im to ensure the transmission of messages only to those users identified in accordance with the law. To do this, the authors of the bill propose to give the subscribers ID number on the basis of contracts, which messengers will be required to enter into with operators.

Also in the state Duma was introduced a bill prohibiting in Russia the use of technology to bypass the blocking of Internet sites. The document proposes to impose on the operators of search engines the obligation to stop on the territory of the Russian Federation providing links to blocked in the country information resources. For failure, it is proposed to set the penalty for citizens — to 5 thousand roubles, for officials — 50 thousand, and for legal entities — from 500 thousand to 700 thousand rubles.

Snowden in June 2013 gave the Washington Post and the Guardian series of secret materials about the programs of surveillance of US intelligence and the UK on the Internet. He flew to Hong Kong and then to Moscow, where some time was in the transit area of Sheremetyevo airport.

Russia gave Snowden temporary asylum for one year on the condition that it will cease operations against the United States. In August 2014, Snowden received a three-year residence permit, which allows him to travel not only in Russia but also abroad. In January 2017, Snowden has been extended residence permits until 2020.
