Russia considers a step in the right direction the initiative of the special envoy of the UN Secretary General Staffan de Mistura for the establishment of a consultative mechanism for constitutional Affairs of Syria. This was stated by TASS Deputy Minister of foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Gennady Gatilov.

“We believe that this is a step in the right direction”, – he told, answering an appropriate question.

Deputy foreign Minister of the Russian Federation noted that such a mechanism would not contradict the discussion of the four agreed topics on the agenda, as advocated by Russia. “Four “baskets” will continue to remain relevant. We have always said that, along with the Constitution, of course, the issues of counter-terrorism is a priority for us, he continued. – But if to speak about a movement, you have somewhere to start.”

“Constitutional issues is the theme that will allow you to hope to move the political process forward,” – said Gatilov.

On Tuesday it became known that de Mistura took the initiative to establish a consultative mechanism on constitutional and legal issues. It is assumed that it will conduct a special meeting of representatives of the office of the special envoy with the experts of the delegations of the government and the opposition, and this could continue in between rounds.

The mechanism will define and study the technical aspects of issues related to the drafting of a new Constitution of Syria.
