In Belgium will open the monument to Peter the Great
BRUSSELS, may 13 — RIA Novosti, Alexander Shishlo. Bronze statue of Peter the Great will open on 21 June in the Belgian city of liège on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the visit of the Emperor of the Belgian lands in 1717.
“In this regard, the Kingdom hosts various cultural events. These include the inauguration on 21 June in liège monument to the first Russian Emperor by sculptor Alexander Taratynova,” — told RIA Novosti press attache of the Russian Embassy in Belgium Violetta Churakova.
According to her, “this initiative of the regional authorities and the Belgian Fund of Peter the Great (Fondation Pierre le Grand) is implemented with the assistance of the Russian Embassy, Rossotrudnichestvo, PJSC “Gazprom”, PJSC “LUKOIL” and other organizations”.
The opening ceremony of the statue will take place at St. Peter’s square. It will be attended by Russian Ambassador to Belgium Alexander Tokovinin, the Governor of the province of liège, Herve Jamar, members of the public and the business community. On the same day planned a series of celebrations in the resort town of Spa.
During the stay in the Belgian lands Peter the Great visited Brussels and Antwerp.
In Belgium, the first monument to the Russian monarch was installed in 1998 in Antwerp in the framework of the festival “Days of Peter the Great”. In Brussels, in the Park next to the Royal Palace, Peter the Great with a small bust, donated in 1856 by Prince Demidov. According to legend, in the Royal Park, the Emperor of Russia retired with one of the society ladies in the course arranged in his honor reception.
