Scientists from the USA have noticed a clear link between the behavior of great white sharks and the phase of the moon.
It turned out that predators attack more often during the full moon, and the exact cause of this phenomenon is not completely clear, according to a paper published in Frontiers in Marine Science.
The researchers analyzed data on shark attacks from 1970 to 2016 from around the world and compared them with lunar phases. The results showed that sharks attacked more often if the illumination of the Moon exceeded 50%.
During the new moon or the first quarter, sharks attacked less often. And during the full moon, when the illumination of the moon was 100%, the predators were the most active.
Great white sharks hunt close to the surface of the water, so lighting is of great importance to them, scientists suggest, but new research will be required for final conclusions.
