Sakhalin head Limarenko: a Danish company wants to lease the Shumshu island in the Kuril Islands

the Danish company Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners to lease the island of Shumshu, which belongs to the Northern Kuril Islands.

The potential tenant specializes in investments in renewable energy sources and plans to produce hydrogen on the island using wind power. The Danish company plans to invest in the project from 2 to 2.5 billion dollars.

“They want to produce 1.5 GW, 120 thousand tons of hydrogen. They ask to rent the island of Shumshu, because the wind is better there. This does not mean that the project will definitely take place, but serious negotiations are underway, and I report this to the country's leadership, “said Limarenko.

According to the governor, the Northern Kuril Islands do not belong to the disputed territories, so there are no obstacles to build long-term relations in the energy sector.

Earlier it became known that Rosneft and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan (METI) are implementing low-carbon projects, as well as exchanging experience and technological solutions in promising areas … The parties plan to assess the potential of new low-carbon technologies aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, as well as increasing the energy efficiency of businesses, including in the field of drilling and oilfield services.
