MOSCOW, 28 Jun – RIA Novosti. The bill congressmen on the military containment of the Russian Federation and the need to develop a plan for sanctions against Moscow for alleged irregularities in the implementation of the INF undermines strategic stability, said RIA Novosti Deputy head of the Department of foreign Affairs on non-proliferation and arms control (DNCW) Vladimir Leontiev.
“The danger, as we see here, especially in the tensions and undermining strategic stability,” — said Leontiev.
The group of 23 Democrats in the Committee on armed services of the house of representatives introduced on June 22 a draft law on military containment of Russia. The number of claims to Russia are referred to the alleged violations by Russia of the Treaty banning intermediate-range nuclear forces (INF). Moscow denies these accusations. The authors propose to develop a plan for sanctions against Moscow on the INF, but do not say what sanctions can be discussed.
The authors of the bill require the Pentagon to develop a plan for the deployment in Europe of high-precision weapons, “to reinforce deterrence with conventional weapons”.
The INF Treaty prohibits parties from possessing ballistic missiles, land-based and cruise missiles with a range of from 500 to 5.5 thousand kilometers. Russia and the United States periodically put forward mutual accusations of violating INF Treaty, signed in 1987.
