Russia entered the top five countries of Europe according to the number taken in 2016 refugee
GENEVA, June 19. /TASS/. Russia last year took in its territory for nearly 230 thousand refugees, taking on this indicator the fifth place in Europe after Turkey, Germany, France and Sweden.
This is evidenced by published on Monday in Geneva, the report of the office of the UN high Commissioner for refugees (UNHCR), “Global trends: forced displacement in 2016.”
According to the document, at the end of 2016 in Russia were 228 thousand 990 people, having refugee status.
The leader in Europe in this respect, the authors of the report called Turkey, adopted at the end of last year, about 2.9 million refugees, mainly from Syria. Followed by Germany (669 thousand 482 persons), France (304 546 thousand), Sweden (164 230 thousand) and Russia.
Turkey is also the world leader in accepting refugees. In second place Pakistan (1.4 million), the third — Lebanon (over 1 million). Followed by Iran (about 1 million) and Uganda (about 1 million). As highlighted in the study, “developing regions continue to bear a disproportionate share of responsibilities for reception”.
Nine of the ten countries hosting the most refugees are in developing countries. And three of them — the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia and Uganda belong to the group of least developed countries.
Globally, in 2016 year, there were 22.5 million refugees, which is a record
figure. For 12 months their number increased by 1.1 million people, or 7%. In view of the refugees, asylum-seekers and internally displaced persons, the total number of displaced people reached to the end of last year in the world of 65.6 million people, 0.3 million more than in 2015.
