Puerto Ricans voted for annexation to the United States on the rights of the state

The majority of voters in Puerto Rico supported the annexation to the US as a state. But Congress with Republican majority is not interested in this and may reject the request.

In Puerto Rico the majority of voters in the referendum voted for joining US. About it reports Reuters with reference to the official data of the election Commission.

Now the government turn to Congress, which can approve the request to become the 51st state. In the vote was attended by only 23% of voters.

The Governor of Puerto Rico Ricardo Rossello said, voters in economically troubled areas the US has sent Congress a powerful message. But Puerto Rico is unlikely to get permission from the Senate, largely because of the position of the Republicans, who do not want inclusion in the country of another state, which is likely to support Democrats.

Puerto Rico is a state, which is “unincorporated organized territory” of the United States, that is controlled by Washington in the presence of a private government.
