In the Syrian settlement there are encouraging factors. This statement was made by President of Russia Vladimir Putin at session of Council of heads of member States of the Shanghai cooperation organization (SCO), reports “Interfax” on Friday, June 9.
“I note that recently in the development of the Syrian crisis, there are encouraging moments. This is directly related to launch here in the capital of Kazakhstan, Astana, under the mediation of Russia and Turkey, and Iran a series of regular international meetings,” — said Putin.
According to him, the major achievements of the negotiation process — agreement on a cease-fire between government forces and the armed opposition, as well as the establishment in Syria of areas of de-escalation. On this basis, the Russian leader has “a real chance to strengthen the cessation of hostilities and to give impetus to the Syrian negotiation process in Geneva.”
During the meeting Putin also said that the countries of the SCO member States intensify efforts to resolve regional conflicts, particularly in Syria. This, in particular, will contribute to the “Convention on combating extremism”, the signing of which is scheduled for today.
The SCO is an international organization founded in 2001 by the leaders of China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. The main objectives of the organization hailed the strengthening of stability and security, fight against terrorism, separatism, drug trafficking, development of economic cooperation, energy partnership, scientific and cultural cooperation.
In July of 2015 has been started the procedure of admission of India and Pakistan, which should be completed by the SCO summit in Astana. Also at the end of this meeting it is planned to sign 11 documents, including the Declaration on joint fight against terrorism.
The SCO summit will be held in Astana on 8-9 of June.
