Northern fleet (NF) is an operational-strategic Association of the Navy of the Russian Federation, he is the “youngest” of all the military fleets. Among the tasks of SF — maintenance of naval strategic nuclear forces in constant readiness in the interests of nuclear deterrence.
From 1 December 2014 on the basis of SF is valid for United strategic command “North”, whose task was the protection of national interests of Russia in Arctic zone. Was formed a group of forces command on the island territories of the Russian Federation in the Arctic, including on Novaya Zemlya, Franz Josef, new Siberian Islands, Wrangel island and Cape Schmidt.
The SF flagship — the heavy nuclear missile cruiser “Peter the Great” project 1144 “Orlan”.
According to open sources, in may 2017, the fleet included 41 submarine:
- 8 nuclear submarines with ballistic missiles of project 941 “Akula”, 955 “Borey” and 667БРДМ “Dolphin”;
- 4 nuclear submarines with cruise missiles project 885 “Ash” and 949A “Antey”;
- 13 multipurpose nuclear submarines of project 671РТМК “Pike”, 971 “Pike-B”, 945 “Barracuda” and 945A “Condor”;
- 9 nuclear submarines of special purpose projects, 1851, 18511, 1910 and 10831 (as-12),
- 1 diesel submarine of a special purpose project 20120;
- 6 diesel submarines of project 877 “Halibut” and 677 “Lada”.
In addition, the fleet included 38 surface ships, including:
- heavy aircraft-carrying cruiser project 1143.5;
- 2 heavy nuclear missile cruiser project 1144 “Orlan” (“Peter the Great” and “Admiral Nakhimov”);
- missile cruiser of project 1164 “Marshal Ustinov”;
- 5 large anti-submarine ships of project 1155, project 956 destroyer “Admiral Ushakov”;
- 2 small missile ship project 12341;
- gunboat;
- 6 small anti-submarine ship project 1124M;
- 4 sea trawler;
- 6 basic minesweepers;
- 1 inshore minesweeper;
- 4 large landing ship project 775;
- 4 landing craft.
Currently, Naval aviation SF gets anti-submarine aircraft Il-38N (upgraded Il-38, equipped with radio-electronic complex “Novella”). In the spring of 2017 in the division of electronic warfare SF received the newest complexes of “Light” and “Samarkand”.
In the framework of the state program of armaments to 2020 is planned comprehensive modernisation of the fleet — it needs to get adopted six multipurpose nuclear and diesel submarines, two large landing ships, one destroyer, five frigates, five minesweepers and 21 support vessel.
The key event of the activities of the fleet was the long cruise ship aircraft carrier group led by the heavy aircraft-carrying cruiser “Admiral Kuznetsov” (October 15, 2016 February 8, 2017).
