Taiwan became the first place in Asia where the authorities have legalized same-sex marriage
BEIJING, may 24 — RIA Novosti, Anna was Raccogli. Taiwan became the first place in Asia, where it has been possible to enter into same-sex marriages, after the Supreme Board of judges on Wednesday ruled in favor of the legalization of these unions, according to the publication South China Morning Post.
The Council, composed of 14 judges, ruled that article 972 of the Civil code stating that marriage is “a Union between a man and a woman” contrary to the Constitution of Taiwan, the newspaper notes.
It is reported that the activists-supporters of same-sex unions for many years tried to defend their interests and have submitted the appropriate requests to the court. The constitutional court of Taiwan on March 24 held a hearing on the legalization of same-sex marriage. The hearing was attended by both supporters and opponents of the initiative.
The debate on the legalization of same-sex unions continues in Taiwan since 2003, when this idea was proposed by the government. Irreconcilable differences on this issue has repeatedly caused mass protests.
