The formal reason for the visit of the head of the German government in the Russian Federation after a two year hiatus is to prepare for the summit of “big twenty”, which will be held in Hamburg in July of this year. However, as expected, the focus will be on all the key topics on the international agenda.
Leaders who before the Ukrainian events of 2014 met quite often for the first time in the last three years will be subject to talk about the current state and prospects of bilateral relations, including cooperation in energy, trade-economic and cultural-humanitarian spheres. “It is planned to address key international problems, including combating terrorism, the situation in the middle East, the implementation of the Minsk agreements on the settlement of the Ukrainian crisis,” — said the press service of the Kremlin.
In turn, the official representative of the German government Steffen Seibert, ahead of his visit said that Merkel is going to discuss with Putin the situation in Ukraine, the conflict in Syria and the political situation in Libya. He also said that the leaders will hold two rounds of talks, between which time to talk to the press.
