Medvedev and the President of Sri Lanka discussed the opportunities of expanding cooperation between the two countries

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev proposed to discuss with the President of Sri Lanka Maitripala sirisena the actions of the governments of the two countries to strengthen cooperation.

“We can exchange useful information that could make our government and your government, so cooperation flourished,” – said Medvedev at a meeting with the President of Sri Lanka.

As noted by the Prime Minister, on the eve of the Sri Lankan leader held productive talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and now have to implement all reached agreements. According to him, between Russia and Sri Lanka on cooperation of the foreign Ministry, Parliament and the Ministry of defense.

“There are a significant number of positions where we can enhance cooperation”, – said Medvedev.

Sirisena noted that it was an honor to come to Russia.

As stated in the certificate common to the meeting of Medvedev and Sirisena, bilateral trade between the two countries in 2016 reached $363 million: the import had $282,3 million, exports of $80.7 million compared with year 2015, the trade turnover decreased by 17%. In 2016 at $12.5 million increased the share of exports of wood and pulp and paper products, three times – to $2.2 million – increased supplies of products of machine-technical group. Imports from Sri Lanka fell to $282,3 million in connection with the reduction of purchases of food products.

According to the results of 2016 while Russia was the largest importer of Ceylon tea. The management of Sri Lanka is interested in attracting Russian business to major projects on the island, including in the energy, oil and gas, tourism sectors and in the development of local transport infrastructure stated in the certificate.
