Calculated anomalous acceleration station New Horizons

New Horizons

Scientists from the University of Porto and of the University of Lisbon (Portugal) calculated anomalous acceleration station New Horizons, due to the thermal radiation of the fragments. Preprint of the study is available in edition “Tapes.ru”.

It quotes scientists estimate that the New Horizons station after crossing the orbit of Pluto acquired an additional acceleration of a billionth of a meter per second squared. This effect is due to anisotropic thermal radiation of structural elements of the apparatus, which is heated under the action of a radioisotope thermoelectric generator.

The scientists based on previously used on Cassini and Pioneer methods estimates of the anomalous acceleration and require the same (thermal) explanation of its nature.

Station New Horizons on 14 July 2015 flew at a minimum distance past Pluto. The main objective of the mission was to study the dwarf planet and its satellite Charon. Previously physicist Louis Bathrooms from the Polytechnic University of Valencia (Spain) analyzed the main anomaly is the deviation from the estimated increase of energy during a gravity assist spacecraft in earth orbit.
