Tolstoy compared the modern EU and the late USSR

Modern European Union (EU) similar to the Soviet Union of the late period, “when no decision was impossible to make, and the bureaucracy did not consider any national interests.” This opinion was expressed by Vice-speaker of the state Duma Pyotr Tolstoy on Friday, March 24, during his visit to Belgrade, reports TASS.

In his opinion, the EU policy has no future. “Of course, we do not wish our European neighbors, such a fate, but we must not fall into euphoria from the fact that they can offer to other Nations some kind of dream,” he said, noting that “so far, except for consumer society and protection of the LGBT community, they are nothing new offered to the world.”

At the same time, said Colon, became the “enemy of the collective West” because it offers an alternative system of values and “doing it with respect for international law”. “What is happening in Syria, what is happening in Ukraine, is perceived by them (Western countries — approx. “Of the tape.ru”) is very painful (…). But Russia is returning to the world stage, and they will have to live with it”, — added the Vice-speaker.

In December last year, Tolstoy said that a potential British exit from the EU will be a strong blow to the idea of European unity. According to him, the current EU decision-making system “is not satisfied different countries”. “So I do not believe that it is a viable design. I have a feeling that in 15 years there will be no European Union,” — said the Deputy. However, he acknowledged that the idea to unite different countries is both a strength and a vulnerability of the EU.
